Course Description:

The course provides the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with the skills to perform a nutrition focused physical exam, empowering the RDN to accurately identify and provide a nutrition diagnosis of malnutrition for patients.

Objectives:

At the end of this course the attendee will be able to:

  1. Determine etiologies of malnutrition
  2. Describe the importance of distinguishing severity of malnutrition
  3. Recognize clinical features of micronutrient deficiencies
  4. Explain how and why a NFPE is a necessary component to diagnosing malnutrition with the Academy/ASPEN clinical characteristics
  5. Perform a NFPE to evaluate fat and muscle loss and micronutrient deficiencies

9:45am - 10:45amSmall Group Workshop
  • Attendees will break into 2 groups and will experience a more in depth look at the nutrition-focused physical exam (NFPE). Group 1 will learn to evaluate fat and muscle loss, while group 2 learns to evaluate micronutrient deficiencies; after 30-minutes the groups will then switch.

11am - 12pmSmall Group Case Studies
  • Attendees will break into groups of 3 and complete 3 case studies utilizing NFPE skills.

Continuing Education:

Loma Linda University Medical Center, Staff Development is a Continuing Professional Education Accredited Provider with the Commission on Dietetic Registration. Registered dietitians and dietetic technicians, registered will receive 3.5 continuing professional education units for completion of this program.
