With the passage of SB 493, all pharmacists are provided with the opportunity to provide routine immunizations without a protocol and furnish prescription medications for international travelers for conditions not requiring a diagnosis, upon completion of certain training requirements. Allowing pharmacists to participate in the provision of travel medicine provides improved access to care for immunizations and self-diagnosable and self-treatable conditions for international travelers. Given the recent passage of the bill, pharmacists may be unaware of the requirements needed to provide these services or the requirements for delivery of these services. Pharmacists may also not be up-to-date regarding travel health information, specifically pertaining to immunizations and treatment options for self-diagnosable and self-treatable conditions. Thus, this CE course will review SB 493 in relation to travel medicine. It will specifically discuss the requirements pharmacist must complete to provide travel medicine, the requirements in the delivery of travel medicine, and up-to-date treatment recommendations for immunizations and self-diagnosable self-treatable conditions for the international traveler.
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Describe the requirements pharmacists must complete to furnish travel medicine under SB493
- Describe the types of immunizations that pharmacists are able to provide under SB493
- Describe the self-diagnosable, self-treatable conditions for which pharmacist are able to furnish prescriptions under SB493
- Describe the treatment options for each self-diagnosable, self-treatable conditions for which pharmacists may furnish prescriptions under SB493
