Introduction

To promote educational effectiveness at Loma Linda University, eight student learning outcomes were developed in August 2007. These outcomes described what students' knowledge, skills or attitudes should be by the end of the program. The year to evaluate the SLO four-year pilot data and analyze the eight SLOs was 2013-2014. The Student Learning Outcomes Committee (SLOC) proposed to change the name of the outcomes from Student Learning Outcomes to Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs) for student learning. The SLOC also recommended to change from eight SLOs to five ILOs. Their recommendations were vetted in all the appropriate committees and were accepted with refinements. The new ILOs are effective beginning in the 2014-2015 academic year.

Professional Institutional Learning Outcomes

In today’s world it is important for all LLU graduates to have excellent professional skills in addition to being experts in their fields in both knowledge and skills. Certainly LLU graduates should have excellent critical thinking, oral and written communication, information literacy and quantitative reasoning skills that are appropriate to their discipline and level. Whole patient care depends on these kinds of professionals. Thus, clinical versions of the rubrics or those from professional accreditors are now appropriate to use with students in clinical programs. It is an alternative assessment approach for programs that have trouble using the standard Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs) and rubrics to fit their discipline/profession and level.
